National Archaeological Museum MANN

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli visita guidata

One of the oldest and most important museums in the world for the richness and uniqueness of its heritage. The walk through the ancient world begins by telling the history of the building that hosts it, which was first a cavalry barracks and then Palazzo dei Regi Studi in the Bourbon era. From the end of the eighteenth century it was transformed into one of the first and most important archaeological museums in Europe, thanks to the figure of King Charles of Bourbon who also promoted the first excavations of the Vesuvian cities buried by the eruption of 79 AD, preserving in the museum part of the treasures found and transferring part of the rich collection inherited from his mother Elisabetta Farnese.

The itinerary continues in the corridors dotted with ancient statues from the Farnesian collection and in the large rooms which display finds from Herculaneum and Pompeii, mosaics, frescoes, everyday and precious objects. Don't miss a look at the magnificent Egyptian Section and the intriguing Secret Cabinet, which houses the various finds with erotic or sexual subjects that gradually came to light in the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. A tour through the centuries and civilizations of the past!
